Come out and meet our sisters to see if our sorority is for you! You can come by yourself or with friends, and join multiple activities with us with no fees and no obligation to join.
For Spring 2023, we plan to have an in-person recruitment and new member process. However, we do encourage the use of masks and testing for the safety and protection of everyone!
Filling out our semesterly interest form prior to recruitment can help sisters reach out to you for any questions you have and get to know you better!
Make sure you're eligible by being an undergraduate student of UMD, have at least 12 credits (AB/IB courses accepted), and a minimum GPA of 2.7.
You also must attend enough required recruitment events to be considered eligible for the final invite-only recruitment events and the possibility to receive a bid.
Spring 2023 Recruitment
This semester from January 30 to February 8, we will hold our in-person recruitment: "Modern Muse." Read all about our events in the post below!
What is recruitment?
Recruitment is a two week period where people interested in joining aKDPhi can come out to learn more about our sisterhood. You'll have a chance to meet the sisters in a fun and casual environment! All events are completely free of charge with no obligation to attend, come and find out what we're all about.
Do I have to be Asian to join?
Absolutely not! aKDPhi is an Asian-interest sorority, not Asian-exclusive, and we welcome girls from all different racial and ethnic backgrounds as we promote cultural awareness.
Am I obligated to join if I attend recruitment?
No, recruitment is non-binding and does not mean you're obligated to join. It's a time for you to express interest and see if aKDPhi is the sorority for you.
Do I have to dress in a certain attire?
Nope! Recruitment is casual, so feel free to arrive however you want as long as you are comfortable.
What are the benefits of joining aKDPhi?
Our sorority can enrich the undergraduate experience of sisters by connecting you to our social and professional network, experience personal growth with a diverse group of women, provide you leadership roles, having a sisterhood that will last a lifetime, and so much more. Each member has their own #WhyaKDPhi story on why they joined and what they love about being a sister!
How can I balance school, aKDPhi, and my other extracurriculars?
While we have plenty of responsibilities and leadership opportunities available for our sorority, we stress the importance of academic excellence and the personal development of our sisters. We have cabinet positions such as Academic Chair, Wellness Chair, and COVID-19 Chair that are dedicated to provide support, resources, and organization for our chapter to improve the wellbeing and time-management skills of sisters.
Eligibility to Join
What is a bid?
A bid is an official invitation from our sorority to join aKDPhi after you complete recruitment requirements and a formal interview.
What are the requirements to join?
In order to be considered for a bid, we ask that you have at least 12 credits (AB/IB courses accepted) and a minimum GPA of 2.7 or above. Even without one of these requirements, you're still welcome to visit recruitment and get to know our sorority.
Rushees must attend at least 1 GIM and 2 Pillar events (Service, Sisterhood, or Cultural) to be eligible for "Invite Only" events and to be considered for a bid.
I can't attend a certain event that would complete my eligibility for a bid, what can I do?
No worries, you can make up for up to one event requirement (GIM, Service, Sisterhood, Cultural). Please contact any sister immediately for us to arrange a separate time to meet with you and go over what you missed!
New Member Program
If I accept a bid, what happens next?
After accepting a bid, you'll become a new member of our sorority and will continue on with our New Member Process. After completing this process, you will officially become a sister of aKDPhi!
What is the New Member Process?
The New Member Process was created by our National Board and approved by UMD's Department of Fraternity and Sorority Life (DFSL) on campus. The purpose is for new members to learn about the sorority and values (similar to taking a 3-credit course for the semester).
Will there be hazing during this program?
Absolutely not, aKDPhi and the University of Maryland follows a no-hazing policy to promote the safety and well-being of all students. Our New Member Process is consistently regulated, and each sister undergoes hazing-prevention training at the beginning of every semester by our sorority governors and the UMD MGC advisor.
Hazing goes against our core values, our advocacy for female empowerment and respect, and our goals to uplift new members to reach their highest potential as a student, employee, and future sister.
